Causes of brown discharge
Brown discharge, basically, it’s nothing to worry about. Generally it’s old blood in the uterus leaving your body. Often from your last period. It may be related to hormonal changes, for example, your body has to get used to the birthcontrol pills you just started taking or the newly placed IUD. It can also mean that your period is coming, or that it is finally ending. Brown blood can also indicate menopause, which starts usually around the age of 45 or an ovulation bleeding (spotting), about fourteen days before your period. The last innocent cause, apart from pregnancy, can be a burst blood vessel in the vagina. This will heal on its own. However, if the brown colour stays on for a few days or weeks, or if there are other symptoms such as vaginal itching, a burning sensation when urinating, a strong odour and / or pain in the lower abdomen, it is best to contact your doctor. These symptoms may indicate an STD, vaginal infection or bacteria that cause the brown discharge. All this will not go away without treatment, so you will have to go to your doctor for medication.
