WHY DOES MY PARTNER SMELL SO MUCH SINCE I'M PREGNANT?

Your partner wants to give you a kiss, but you quickly pull back. Yuck, he stinks! Since you're pregnant, your strong sense of smell has suffered greatly. At first, you didn't like anything better than your partner's smell. Now you can barely stand his smell. How is this possible?

You hate it, but you can't help it. Since you're pregnant, you sometimes find your partner extremely smelly. You have the sense of smell of a tracking dog and know exactly what he (or she) has eaten or drunk. Sometimes you almost pass out, that's how much your partner stinks. So why did he eat onions this afternoon? And was it really necessary to drink all those beers? He tries to kiss you, but you back away. "Iew, you stink!" Not only can he stink out of his mouth, but his body odor - which you normally love so much - can suddenly make you vomit and not like it. Especially on hot days, when he sweats more and thus a stronger smell comes out of his pores. Are you bored with your partner; you must like your lover's scent, right? No, don't worry. It's a normal phenomenon that you find your partner, the father of your child, smelling less good during your pregnancy. Your blood relatives, on the other hand, your dear family, you can smell them all day long. They don't smell. Too bad they don't crawl against you in bed at night. So hang in there the next few weeks. When you're pregnant, you'll love the familiar, natural smell of your family members.

WHY DOES MY PARTNER SMELL SO BAD?

Surprise: it has everything to do with your hormones. Like pretty much everything else during your pregnancy. You're a hormone bomb. You have mood swings, morning sickness, are tired and have 101 other ailments. You've probably heard that women fall for their partner's smell, among other things. Do you find someone stinky on the first few dates? Then the chances are slim that you will fall madly in love and end up together. Research shows that a woman is most likely to fall for men whose HLA genes differ moderately to strongly - but not too strongly! - differ from her own. So basically, you don't fall for someone with similar HLA genes. But as soon as you become pregnant, your sense of smell changes because of all the hormones racing through your body. Suddenly, you feel enormously comfortable with smells that remind you of your family and relatives. Old and familiar! Your sense of smell is also greatly enhanced by the abundance of hormones. You are so full of hormones that your body sometimes doesn't know what to do with them. This causes you to become nauseated more quickly by smells, your taste changes and you will find your partner stinks faster if, for example, he has eaten something you absolutely do not want.

HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH THAT STINKY GUY OF YOURS?

We know, you're suffering from your hormones. You may be a little less tactical at the moment and react from your feelings and emotions. But also take a moment to think about that poor partner of yours. Yes, he may stink (according to your nose and brain), but he can do so little about it. Realize that it's never fun to hear that you stink. So break the news gently. Explain to him what is happening in your body, what you are feeling and what you are smelling. He will understand you. You can't help it. He can't help it. It's normal, it's part of it. As soon as the baby is born, you can crawl in each other's arms and sniff each other's body odor for hours again (if the baby sleeps through the night?). Try to bite through every now and then and not reject all his kisses and cuddles. Be nice to your partner, because it's not always easy being a pregnant woman. And make sure you always have gum in your pocket. That helps.
